… crisp apple streudels! These are a few of my favorite things

The lyrics of song from the sound of music kept chanting on my head when I was in Austria. One of them was “my favourite thing” and a particuliar refrain kept my attention “Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels … These are a few of my favorite things!”

strudels

When I was in Austria, I told myself that I had to try at least once and it was totally worth having it.  After a long walk, I stopped myself in one of the pastry shop in Vienna’s most famous shopping street, Karntnerstrasse, that runs fro Stephansplatz out to the Wiener Staatsoper, the opera house.

I mistakenly pronounced it as “stradelz” and received an ankward look from the owner. For less than 5 euro, my hot freshly baked apple streudels was served with vanilla ice cream and custard, accompanied by a rich hot chocolate drink. A must try austrian national dish, which funny enough, by history, was derived from a turkish pastry, baklava.
